  1. In today's class discussion, we learned about the argumentative essay. I believe that this type of essay is similar to a persuasive essay. In both types of essays, the writer must persuade the reader to agree with your topic based on the evidence you use. Although I already learned somewhat of this type of essay, it refreshed my memory of what is needed in an argumentative/persuasive essay.

    1. Argumentative essay is an essay that discusses a controversy. Both sides of the argument have to be presented after the first paragraph has stated the thesis and relevance to the audience ( exigence). The general rule is to write at least 5 paragraphs, of which at least 3 present evidence supporting or discarding the thesis (warrant). The last paragraph, conclusion, should shed new light , readdress the thesis.

    2. Argumentative is also a persuasive essay. I agree with you though on persuading the reader to agree with your topic.

    3. I would choose the topic " Fathers should (not) be allowed the same treatment as mothers in family court decisions. (Too) Many times the mother is favored because of the nurturing stereotype". I had recently accessed to official data that points female parents/grandparents as more beneficial in the development of a child. I think that the benefit of the child is the goal and not the pleasing of a parental need.

    4. It was refreshing. And yes a persuasive essay is somewhat similar to an argumentative essay but an argumentative essay is arguing your statement by providing a solid prove through researches and experiences.

    5. That is a great topic due to children who actually want to reside with their fathers. Also, some fathers are good with their children's and maybe can't stand their wife. To me i think the child should be the one to choose whether they want to reside with whom.

  3. The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. I am yet to choose my topic because there are so many of them to choose from. Overall, today's activities were very interesting. It was great to here that there are many ways a paragraph can be developed. My memory was definitely refreshed and I look forward to more!

  4. An argumentative essay is an essay in which you have to research and evaluate a topic and know where you stand in the argument, whether you are with it or against it. It deals with a lot more research compared to expository essays. The topic that I chose to write about is "All animal experimentation (including cancer research) should be outlawed as advances
in technology have made animal testing unnecessary" because animal cruelty isn't a pleasant thing to see. These are often the things that we are unaware of and it is sad because they have no say or cannot even defend themselves.

  5. Argumentative essay is an essay where you examine a topic and search for solid proofs to support it. Collecting data, research, and experiments would be a big help to boost up your argumentative essay. The topic I've chosen to write about is "Drivers nationwide should not be permitted to use cell phones while driving
(talking and/or texting)". I chose that because I know many reasons to support it and I've experienced an accident due to that issue.

    1. I believe that is a good topic because I have seen the dangers of texting/ talking while you are driving. Many people have died or crashed while they were on their phones.

    2. Its great that you are promoting safety on the road. I know a lot of people that have almost gotten into an accident because of that. Safety is not a small matter.

    3. I am sorry to hear about your accident. I think it is an excellent idea to write about that topic since you know from personal experience the consequences.

  6. Argumentative essay is about providing good support through previous knowledge or through research. In class we read "writing the paragraphs" we learned about the two different effective patterns and about the four different kinds of paragraphs.

  7. The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic. They will have to collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. In today's class, we discussed about " The paragraph defined" and "Basic paragraph patterns." I learned that there are two different types of patterns. Pattern A and Pattern B have a topic sentence and support sentences, but Pattern B has a concluding sentence.

  8. An argumentative essay is basically the similar to persuading essays. It discusses I believe two topics and persuading the readers into following that one topic the writer is leaning towards more. I am choosing the topic, "We should use death row inmates as subjects for medical testing rather than animals." It seems like a intresting topic to write about

    1. This topic really does sound interesting. The pros and cons of the experiments might cause uproar by humanitarians.

  9. An argumentative essay is an essay written and backed up by facts, evidence, and researches. It is to compare and contrast two statements, opinions, or believes. My topic would be "Every state should enact a divorce counseling law that requires married couples to go through counseling before being granted a divorce." Because I believe that maybe the only reason why they want to divorce is that they lost the spark and that they don't realize it anymore. And divorces always bad affects on the kids.

  10. An argumentative essay is an essay that has a lot of research and explanatory details, unlike the much similar expository essay. if I were to choose an argumentative essay topic, it would be that we should have a national health insurance program in the United States and model the program on successful ones used in Europe(or Canada). I chose this topic because there are so many people without coverage or enough money to pay for basic health services. I would like to deeper into this topic and show the pros and cons.

  13. A argumentative essay is a essay that involves a research or to gather information. The thesis has to to be in first paragraph and it has to be clear. The essay would be 5 paragraph long. You would agree or disagree on the essay. The argumentative essay i would chose would be uniforms for school from k to 12. I would chose this because some families can not afford nice clothes like others. I liked today's topic because it made more sense on how a paragraph should look like.

    5. Very good explanation as to why you chose your topic. Children are often bullied because of their appearance and uniforms was a way to deter bullying.

    6. I agree that kids especially in public schools should have uniforms and I think they should be provided by the school for students who can prove that cannot afford it.
Yes, today we had more information about the paragraphs. I am going to reread once again though about the thesis. I am still a little unsure about the issue that the topic sentence is not too broad, narrow or vague.

The activity in class today was very helpful and I think I can do more of the exercises and not be confused. I am interested in the topic of the birth control pill too. I think that there is plenty of evidence to prove your argument. FDA must have records.
