Example: Yesterday, I had an unusual fiesta experience at the Field House.
Please note that the above topic sentence enables the audience to inquire what kind of experience you've had and why it was unusual.
In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities.

Topic Sentence for the spring break: My friends and I had a lot of fun at the beach.
ReplyDeleteToday's class was okay. We were required to write a common assessment on the forms of genre. It was interesting to find out that this is one of my problems. I tend to write things I would put in a text message, in an email to my professor.
Brainstretcher: I believe the sport is called wakeboarding. It looks like a hot day. I've always wanted to try this and I plan to try it someday in the near future. It also looks like they're in a lake.
I always wanted to try wakeboarding as well. Seems fun!
DeleteSame problem with me. I always write things I would put in a text to anyone.
DeleteWake boarding sounds so fun. I would love to try it one day.
DeleteBrain Teaser
ReplyDeleteThis picture looks like a room a munchkin would use. Look how small it is! No way an adult can use that. Make a room that small on Guam and you'll be having a lot of problems considering how huge people are getting these days. And those clothes look smaller than a middle schooler or a freakishly tall elementary student will use.

Today, we did an in class essay and a short summary. The summary wasnt that hard, but the in class essay kind of annoyed me. Not because I couldnt do it, but because I didnt like doing it.
I agree with one and two. I think the part we don't like is our works being critiqued. It almost seems that grammar was written with so many rules and so many exceptions to those rules.
DeleteFunny. The room is probably just a toy play house that is why it looks so small. I think a mice would definitely enjoy staying there.
DeleteThis in class essay really got me thinking twice on what I am going to write about. But, it is a really good practice though.
DeleteI agree..we will definitely get better with practice
DeleteA great topic for spring break would be,The Great Outdoors. Because this spring break, I went camping with a couple of my friends. We had a great time camping, swimming and just hanging out.
ReplyDeleteMy picture is about an old restaurant next to the woods. It is a great place for a family dinner. Plus there is a bar inside of it. People can just come in after work and just have a drink then eat dinner after that.
Your topic would be good because many things could happen outdoors.
DeleteThat is a great topic because doing outdoor things is always fun to do. I love exploring the beautiful island of Guam.

Today was interesting in many ways. I love the challenge of the Genre assignment. It was a great brain challenge for such an early morning. All in ll though I hope we don't have to do it again. Although I liked it this time I may not like it again.
Yes, the genre assignment was challenging for me as well, but it is good practice.
DeleteAlthough I did not enjoy it because it was challenging to me, a little challenge will make you a better writer.
DeleteI thought the genre assignment seemed challenging.
DeleteI found the genre assignment a little bit difficult for me. It was definitely challenging.
DeleteTodays activity provided greater understanding of genre and relating your thesis to the types of genre. It allowed me to think critically about the differences and to distinguish which type was related to my summary. Surely, I will become more proficient with practice. My forthcoming papers will showcase gradual improvement.
ReplyDeleteI agree. We would all get better with practice.
DeleteIt did provide a greater understanding but it was challenging at the same time. Practice surely gets your writing better and better everyday.

I live in Alaska for two years but I was very young so I barely remember anything about Fourth Avenue.
Today's class activities really had me thinking. I had to read the selection given to us about four times before I could even think about a good idea for my writing topic. The selection was something to think about, I never realized that we have different types of genres when communicating with certain people whether its thru text and or email.
My brain hurts. Part one had me rereading in order to understand what I was going to be writing about.
DeleteMy question is, "What if we had the whole portion to read instead of just an excerpt of what genre is?"
DeleteBut now I know that posting is a genre, jokes are genre, and etc.
It really required for us to focus and use our mind.
DeleteOver spring break, we experimented with different cupcake recipes.

A topic I would discuss for Spring Break would be about relaxation. We've all, by now, experienced the stress of working and going to college, or merely going to college, and spring break is a time to just relax and recounter everything and probably find ways to balance it all with less stress.
Today's class was alright. I think the assessment opened my mind to getting into my writing more critically.

Red Train truck

A topic for spring break would be going hiking with my friends.
Today's class had me thinking. I had to reread the selection a couple of times to actually know what I was suppose to write about. I like how it challenged me to think critically but it frustrated me so much because I did not fully understand the assignment. Even though I had a hard time, I tried my best and hopefully I did good.
Okay Abby, we get it! You aren't used top thinking so hard. Oh I'm kidding. However, I, too, was frustrated! The ONLY kind of genre I have ever learned were the surface types of genres of writing (ie: poems, journals, scientific fiction, etc.) so I was extremely lost. Thank God it won't affect our grade!
DeleteYes, I agree that it was really frustrating trying to decipher what the excerpt really meant. Although it is an English class, genre of writing was not a great topic to write about. We were all puzzled of what the specific name of genre was Facebook posts and emails.
DeleteIt was challenging and we will gain the knowledge, skills and abilities to decipher genres and different types of essays through activities like today.
DeleteIT was really frustrating because i was confused as to what the article meant.
DeleteIn the end, all it matters is that you did your best. So do not be too hard on yourself.
DeleteMy post card is a picture of a beautiful sunset of Upper Klamath Lake in southern Oregon. This sunset reminds me of Guam because we have such beautiful sunsets. It looks like a place where you can get to think and reflect about your life and yourself. It has orangey sky fading into the light blue sky above it. Nice hill silhouette.
ReplyDeleteThis really had me thinking a lot because we had to write and essay about genres. This topic was really hard to relate it with my opinion. I do not know if it was just me but this really made me have a brainfart because I did not know what to write about and plus I do not know I even wrote it correctly. Overall the class was a great experience.
The class was a great experience for us to reflect back on. We could see our weakness in writing and learn on how to improve from that. I think I could have improved if I read a little bit more often.
DeleteI totalIy agree with you both.
DeleteI like how it challenges us and lets us know what we need to improve onn in our writing.
DeleteI agree that it was hard to relate the topic.
DeleteOur minds are not always operating at 100 percent. Sometimes we need to take more time on a certain topic to be able to grasp the concept.
DeleteA pink house
ReplyDeleteBeautiful view from the balcony

the topic I would choose for spring break is going to the beach. The beach is a relaxing place to go to when you're stressed out, also the vibes there are always on point.
Today's activity was okay. It made me think twice of what I was going to write, because other professors we're going to read it. I don't really like other people reading anything personal I write down.
I agree. I also do not like other people reading the personal things I write down.
DeleteI also would not want any other professor read my works. I feel that as a class, we've gotten comfortable enough to share these things with EACH OTHER. I also like how we both focus on relaxation as a topic for spring break.
DeleteAlso, Jay..."jayjuiiice"...I love how once you speak, everyone is so tuned in! You really make the class laugh!
Good choice of topic to write about. I agree about other people reading what I write about but it is a good practice and it really helps for writing skills improvements.
DeleteThe beach is a great topic to write about spring break. It leads to many activities and even spontaneous events.
DeleteGood choice for a topic for spring break. The beach is one of the most accessible places here on Guam. There is plenty of things to do specially with the whole family.
DeleteThe topic I would explore for spring break would be, Our Spring Break is One Week, But Felt Like Just A Two Day Weekend.
ReplyDeleteBrainstretcher: I see a clear and cloudy blue sky. From a distance, I see far away huge red rocky mountains. Trees minimizing in a perspective view. I see an empty road with no cars in sight.
Today's class activity about genres was unexpected. I am not really good when having to write in minimal time. I like to take my time instead and relax when thinking about what to write. However, it was a good practice though. It caught me off guard, but I always have to be ready.
Today's activity was unexpected. But it is a good practice to learn about genre. Got caught off guard but we have to stay prepared always.
DeleteI also despise writing under pressure; however, I seem to write well when procrastinating, why is that?
DeleteDon't worry Ringo, you're not alone.
I agree that even if we passed EN085, we should still be a little more capable of writing essays in class. The extra practice can give us an insight of where we stand and how we progressed.
DeleteI feel we are all improving. I love the energy in this class...feeling really blessed with such wonderful classmates / mentors and patient professor.
DeleteEven though we do not have as much time to write in class, we are still able see how far we have gotten compared to the beginning of the semester.
DeleteTodays in class activity was very helpful but I had to re-read the lesson to understand more. The writing was unexpected but it was a good practice. The topic I would write about is all about me because I already have my previous essay and it would be much easier to revise it.

Spring time
Today's EN100 Assessment was quite a challenge for me. I was not comfortable with the topic. I was under a lot of pressure and had a hard time writing. Although it was not part of our grade, I did not make feel any more relaxed. I was not too familiar with the specific genres other than literature. There were no specific category for the genres mentioned in the excerpt.
My topic sentence would be: I had a spontaneous weekend to end my spring break.
DeleteIn my brain stretcher I see a nice and beautiful sun set.
ReplyDeleteA great spring break topic would be, "Going of island for a week."
ReplyDeleteToday's discussion is a challenge because it is more in depth when it comes to essays. There are different genres and different types of essays. Sometimes in order for us to fully understand the essay we need to determine what kind of essay it is. Some essays are easier to relate to than others. However, we need to keep in mind that everybody has their own style of writing and expressing themselves.
