Reflection – Writing the Controlling Idea/Organizing and Developing Support - Sec. 7 - April 3

Visit this URL: http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/onlineguide/chapter2-10.cfm Now that you are well familiar with a controlling idea/organizing and developing support, discuss a topic sentence that would be good to explore for the Spring Break.

Example: Yesterday, I had an unusual fiesta experience at the Field House.

Please note that the above topic sentence enables the audience to inquire what kind of experience you've had and why it was unusual.

In addition, discuss your thoughts on today's class activities, including your essay brain stretcher picture.

  1. I think that spring break's topic sentence would be "rest and relaxation in the springtime." I did a lot of sleeping and enjoying life during my spring break as you can tell from my topic sentence. Today's essay was nice, it helped me get a little more understanding of genres.

    1. As for my essay brain stretcher, I see a postcard from nchorage Alaska

    2. I also see a crowded town and lots of signs for gifts. It shows both a night time picture and a daytime picture of what the town is like. I've been there before, but maybe not the area this picture was taken.

    3. That topic sounds like something I wish!
So, you have been all the way to Alaska? Nice! I have never been there, but I would like to visit. Excellent fishing there.

    4. That topic sounds pretty awesome. The hard part is going back to class after spring break. Reality check for us students.

  2. I think my Spring break topic sentence would be " Having fun in the sun." I spent a lot of time at the beach. I don't know why, mostly because of the sun. Guam has one the most beautiful beaches on island. That's most definitely one major reason. Today's activities were really nice. Had a great understanding of genres.

    1. That topic for spring break sounds fun. I agree that people should go out and go to the beach to relax.

  3. Brain stretcher: fall time, church, golden leaves, sunny, ground covered with the leaves! Trees.

  4. A topic sentence that would best describe my spring break would be 'life of the bored and ignored'. I did nothing, but stay home and be antisocial because that's all I felt like doing. Anyway, today's activities were informative. I learned that writing to a certain genre helps you with your thinking process.

    Essay Brain Stretcher:
Rafter Room of the Riley Home
Looks like another room from a scary movie
    That bed looks too small
There are goblins under the bed that will get you if you're not looking
I'd like to explore that room
    Old fashioned
    Cute
    Creepy

    1. Did you feel bored/ignored or you chose to seclude?
I like "old fashioned, cute, creepy". It actually describes very well a feeling that can be generated out of those adjectives combined.

  5. I think my Spring break topic would be "making paper". Sadly during the break, I didn't get a break. I accidentally mentioned my spring break at work, so my boss made me work on my usual days off because of school, Tuesdays and Thursdays. It wasn't all bad for me though, I made hit overtime.

Today's activity was new to me. I understand genres much clearer.

    2. I am sorry to hear you did not have a proper break. It is good though, you can see the positive in it: hit overtime at work.

    3. It sounds like you made a lot of money over the spring break. Showing the manager that you work long hours at work is plus.

  6. My Spring break topic would be "Home Sweet Home". Because I mostly stayed home doing house work. I had a hard time leaving the house. It was like I was attached to it. Everytime I go somewhere, I'm always in a rush to go back home. I do not why but, I can never stay away for too long,

    1. I understand what you are saying: you go back home where you feel in control, safe, and do what you want. I also understand you were catching up on chores. I tried to catch up with chores too, but I had two days for outdoors fun: boating/ fishing and Tarza Waterpark.

  7. The best topic sentence for me would have been, exhausting not fun. I worked a lot of hours during my break and it was pretty tiring. Also, todays activity was an eye opener because I learned about writing genres

My essay brain structure: I see a beautiful sunset near a lake in Oregon. It is a huge lake and from reading the back, it is one of the largest lakes in Oregon.

  9. I think the topic sentence for my spring break would be "Adventures and amazing food along with good company make a good time." Over the break my friends and I ate out a lot and went absolutely everywhere in Guam. We tried new eating at places down south because we never really went down south and we swam at a lot of beaches. Today in class I have acquired a better understanding of genres. We had to write an essay in class which was quite difficult for me because I had writers block.

My picture for the brain stretcher essay is a picture of pilgrims eating at a table with the natives of America. A man is praying and giving thanks as the people gather around to eat food.

    1. The church is one of the most important places people usually go to.

  10. Brainstretcher: church, cool place to exchange vows with someone, dry trees, haunted,

  11. My picture shows Pilgrims and Native Americans sitting at an outdoor table for the first thanksgiving. This historical event was captured in a painting and put into a museum for all to see.

As writers we have many different genres that each have their own response. each genre also has an appropriate time for use. for example you would not write a dirty joke to your professor or write a love letter to your boss. I have had to use multiple genres throughout my high school and college life.

  12. The topic sentence I would use for my spring break is "Spring Training", because all I did was go to my mandatory practice, crossfit, and weight lift for the break.

Today, in class we made a summary and a story on something pertaining to genres.I thought the summary was easy, but the story on genres gave me a hard time.

    Brain Structure:
    Big tree
    little tree
    forest
    big rock
    little rock
    dirt road
    mountain side

  13. My topic sentence would be "Spring break is just a deep breath between dives without a tank".
I chose today a postcard that somewhat relates to the Spring Break: it depicts a serene, mountainous region, covered in snow. You can see the woman was skiing, and she stopped to enjoy the view from an elevation. She is observing in the direction of the village-resort, as if she knows that she has to go back, and just stopped to reflect. It also looks like snow started melting which indicates that time for skiing is getting close to its end...
Today's Common Assesment was something that I have not done before. I had to interrupt Dr. Rivera several times to make sure what were the goals and expectations. I consider this Part 1 in the writing process worksheet ( aside from the following stages).
I did not go into many details in the summary; instead, I used the examples as minor supports. I restated in very simple words the author premises.
The opinion/reaction part was another simple interpretation, but this time, personal.
I wrote about emails and texts I exchange with my husband daily. This way I was able to contrast purposes of written content. Emails that we exchange are more formal, versus text, where emoticons are used, which are intimate in nature.

  14. My topic sentence would be "over time". My spring break was very tiring due to my work schedule. I had to work over time because the other employee kept calling in sick and they didn't have any one to replace her. Obviously, every job would call anyone who is available. I was tired, but i still tried to work more hours before i going back to school.

    1. Sorry to hear that you worked long hours. The money may sound good to make but your health comes first.

  15. I see people exploring in the cold winter snow. I see mountains that are covered in snow and ice. The explores are using a big red snow mobile to get around. The place were there at looks so beautiful.

  16. In class we had a two part assignment to finish. The first one was to summarize a essay about genre and the second was write a essay about things we had done in the pass in class. I feel it was a good test to keep us in our toes so we know where we stand. I really feel that English is hard subject to comprehend, but I am going to do my best to get through it.

In my spring break topic I would choose " How to stay focus for school while you are in spring break".
