We should avoid run-on sentences because it would make our sentences sound and look wrong. Run-ons can be separated into two or more sentences. With this in mind, you can avoid making the mistake of a run-on sentence. Today's lecture was interesting. It was also nice to hear Mrs. Angelica's essay to give me an idea of how to do my self reflection.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was a pleasure to share. I hope that my essay represented what Dr. Rivera expected. If not, everyone who follows my idea will be in trouble!
DeleteYes, today's class was interesting. I must add that I am surprised how many of us find stage three challenging.
Yes, there is nothing wrong with breaking down a run on into two complete sentences.
DeleteI agree, it does make our writings look wrong. Also, we need to learn how to revise those run-ons to strengthen our essay. It would benefit us in the future.
DeleteRun on sentence does make a sentence sound wrong. If a sentence can be broken down into two then it's a run on sentence.
DeleteNo doubt man! I agree.
DeleteRun on sentences makes us sound like robots if we read the sentences for long period of time without a pause. This link has good examples on run on sentences.
DeleteAvoiding run-on sentences will make your sentences look correct. In today's discussion, we went over the writing the process worksheet. I saw how aggravating it was to revise someone's essay/paragraph. You should not just skim through someone's paragraph/essay because it's very important that you review it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that editing is the most labor intensive phase in writing; There are many things to pay attention to. Just the coherence/unity part is a task itself! That is why I think that stage 2 ( organization) is a crucial step. Rewording is another challenge because we tend to write how we speak in everyday life. It is difficult to find the style that will be appropriate for general public. All the essays we read from the textbook are somewhat simple in language and the ideas are clear. It takes practice.
DeleteYes, I agree on your viewpoint on revising someone's essay. It is worth it to have your essay looking better in the end though. The writing process is really a good tool.
DeleteTrue, I agree with you. Having to skim through someone else essay would be be wrong because you would not learn from the person's mistakes. Also, you can end up doing the same mistakes without noticing it.
DeleteTrue, you need to make sure that you avoid those run-on sentences!
DeleteWell, I must admit that I want to squeeze too much into a sentence and it is difficult to follow. Lately, I have been trying to make a break (punctuation) between ideas. I try to mix short and long sentences as suggested for essays. It is a skill to find that balance. I read as a teenager some of Friedrich Nietzsche's work, and he had the longest sentences I have ever seen. I thought it was actually amusing trying to figure out what did the author wanted to convey. Anyway, I know that a run-on sentence is not appropriate for general audiences.
ReplyDeleteI think that the modification of the free-writing is very extensive. I find it somewhat difficult to correct certain grammatical and punctuation issues. I use the commas in excess so I am trying to curb its use. The other problem is that I have no reference for English syntax. When I do editing, I will usually keep making the same mistake because I do not see the error in the first place. For example, if I read someone else's work, I will not be able to recognize the error either. It is not a problem of objectivity but just lack of proper knowledge. Anyway, today's class gave me a little more insight into this process.
I see what you're talking about, how I also like to pack ideas into one sentence. Also, I use commas more than I should to sound correct in some of my work. It's a prolonging task to break up a sentence you already made. I already knew most of how to fix mistakes in an essay, but today's lesson showed that I can correct more than I think.
DeleteI believe we all make these mistakes once in a while. The only time we notice it is when we proof read it ourselves or another person is revising it.
DeleteGreat overview of the class activity!
DeleteWe often don't find sentences run on because of the way we speak. We should avoid them, however, because it is what affects our writing from being understood and often throws off our reader's understanding. If a sentences is too long, you must break it down, and make another sentence. In addition, I wasn't able to go to class, but the book and this attachment pretty much gave me a good understanding of run on sentences and what to avoid.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we do use run-ons in everyday speech, which is why we sometimes make the mistake of running-on. The attachment is really good at showing us the example.
DeleteI agree too, we write run-on sentences because we are use to speaking that way.
DeleteToday we worked on the three stages of writing. We had to choose one out of the ten topics available and go through with stage one and two. Since the third stage is the longest one, we spent a lot of time on it. We saw how sentences were restructured, punctuation corrected, parts of sentences eliminated or replaced , and so on.
DeleteI also read my Midterm Self-Reflection narrative essay to the class since I was the only one brought it.
I agree that writers often don't find sentence run on because of the way we speak. Writing it down you get to see that mistake you made because the sentence is really long and if it can be broken down into two sentences then it's a run on sentence.
DeleteHonestly, I would say I write a lot of run-on sentences when i am in a rush. When I am nervous and writing an essay for the test, I would have more than one run-on sentences. It's like a habit for me, but I need to change that habit. It is not good to have them in an essay especially a test.
ReplyDeleteYes, under the pressure of an in-class test I can see not even having the time to edit. Run-on sentences would be abundant. But they are just fine during the free-writing phase. You just have to take the time to separate them into two or more sentences during the third stage.
DeleteRun-on sentence is one of my main mistake when writing an essay especially when I am in a rush. Re-reading your essay helps because you get to go over it and if it does not make sense then you know that it needs to be revised.
DeleteRun-on sentences can confuse your readers. Having to read two sentences made up in one sentence. How can they feel what you were feeling when writing that sentence? For an essay to be effective; The writer has to make them feel what they feel.
ReplyDeleteIt can be very difficult for readers to understand your writing if there are run-on sentences in what you have written. Basically an easy way to check your sentences is to read it aloud, at least that's my way to check if it sounds correct. Having run-on sentences can really make a poor essay that can lead to a bad grade.
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult for me to understand a sentence if it is a run-on sentence. I agree that reading it out loud or have someone else read it to you would help a lot.
DeleteIn class activity today was working on three stages. Then there was the activity about choosing one of the ten topics and go through stages one and two. It was really helpful because it showed me how a sentence should be corrected in what way when revised.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree.
DeleteRun-on sentences are like the biggest pet peeve for me personally. I find it really hard to understand a paragraph, let alone an essay when run-on sentences are present. In order to make sure your essay is free of these grammatical errors, it is highly required that you as the writer must read over your essay. If you are lucky, you might find one hidden in all the words. Today's activities was a great learning experience nonetheless!
ReplyDeleteRun on sentences make a paragraph sound bad. When you have run on sentences you are cramming too many ideas together with the improper conjunctions and punctuations, it makes you look bad as a writer.
ReplyDeleteI have always been taught that run on sentences are a no-no in the writing world. Run on sentences for most people tend to get confused or annoyed. We should try to avoid run on sentences by using correct punctuation. However, a sentence can be long as long as you use the proper punctuation.
