Reflection - Feb. 4 - Sec. 7

Share your thoughts regarding today's activities. (Re: Writing Process: Stage One, Exploring/Experimenting/Gathering Information)

  1. I believe it helped to get peer reviewed. My reviewer found some errors that i missed. He also added some information that I could add to my final paper. This section of the book shows us the very base of beginning the writing process. I liked enforcing my knowledge of the PROPER writing process.

    2. There is no doubt in my mind that the peer review was helpful today. It showed some errors that I didn't even see.

    3. Peer review was surprising! "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" comes to mind. Classmates had different expectations from what they were reading in regards to vocabulary, structure of sentence, what should be expanded on and other. Personal tastes, interests and experience reading in a particular language, do influence to some degree how someone perceives the work they review.

    4. Peer review is always good. You get to see things from another person's point of view.

  2. The writing process is important because it can make it easier for us to write an essay. By learning the strategies, it can help us not have a writer's block. For example, free writing which falls under exploring, allows us to get words on paper and generate new ideas for our topic. In brainstorming and clustering is also important because it is a quick and easy way to find phrases that relate to our topic. Lastly, gathering information is important in the writing process because we need it to take notes, underlining and annotating.

    1. I completely agree! I think it is important for all of us to learn all these strategies. Why? Because it will help us further our knowledge on how to write. The writing process may see like a giant to take on, but in reality it's as simple as a rock.

    2. Yes, knowing the tools to organize ideas helps tremendously. I never used this process before and I see the difference how the writing becomes far more structured, understandable and I am able to communicate a point on a topic. I also like interpreting the greeting cards because they are like the underlining in a free-writing. You can also see even more possibilities when you hear the interpretation of the same card by someone else. I think that these tools bring out creativity in free- writing.

  3. Today's activity was a good refresher. The free writings that were shared from the class were interesting, and I would like to add that I agree on everyone's thoughts on "why a college education is important".

    1. Sabina is right. Today was a refresher if not for me, but for everybody. Writing is a step-by-step process. If we don't take the necessary actions in following these stages then how are we to advance.

  4. I am familiar with the writing process, and its strategies, I have just never used them in such a detailed way as we learned in class today. As soon as we finished reading and i got a better idea of how to use the strategies in a more broad way, i feel much more confident to use these strategies and apply them to future essays, or any other writing assignment that may come. I also realized i never ask myself those "big six questions" when ever i want to write something, i usually just go straight to writing about my topic as much as i can without a real solid base for writing. After today's lesson I will try my best not to make those same mistakes.

    1. No doubt Nate is right. I too got a better idea in how to use the writing process. It just shows that writing is more than just a pencil, words and a piece of paper. It's a well-oiled machine. We must follow the necessary steps, and make sure everything is in their place.

    2. I agree with Nate. I never asked myself those 6 questions neither and I see how the writing became more of a monologue than an idea to be shared with others. Those 6 answers are what the readers want to know.

  5. In today's activities, it was proven that the writing process is very lengthy. I am actually very familiar with process. I always use the freewriting when making my essays. Because it helps me figure out the ideas that I need to focus on. Hopefully, I am not the only one that does this.

    1. Todays activity was very helpful. And I agree that writing is very lengthy. Free writing is my favorite part because I get to free write my essay without having to worry about grammars, sentence structures, etc.

    2. I never used free-writing before and it is an excellent step to take. It is like talking to yourself at this point (" thinking before you speak"). Later steps help me clarify the idea that I will finally communicate (underlining, annotations, clustering, and so on).

  6. Today, the reading was on the stages of the writing process. It was more of a review and it was very informative on how each step was suppose to go. I personally like doing the first step, free writing is easy and I don't have to worry about grammar or sentence structure.

  11. Peer reviewing is a vital importance in the writing process. Your peer review partner goes over your entire essay and edits parts of it. Comments or feedback is provided to help improve your essay. Constructive criticism should be seen positively to better your writing. It helps you see through the reader's perspective and change and improve parts of your essay that isn't understandable.
